Summer isn’t all about sand castles, white beaches and cold beverages on hot days, especially not if you are one of the 20,000 children who receive free lunch at school while it is in session or if you are the hard working parents of those kids that, come June, have to scramble to find enough food to put on the table while school is out. If their children are receiving a free lunch, likely they are also taking home a sack supper for later. During those 10 or 11 weeks of summer, parents, often times a single parent, spend double for weekly groceries than during the school year. Read full post
The Pantry is the hub of our reality; all our other services are spokes, which radiate out from that center. This applies not only to our history and our present circumstances, but it will remain to be true in the future no matter what other services we take on.
The Pantry is the reason for which nearly all of our neighbors initially come see us. Since the Pantry is at the center of our existence it has the prominent place in our logo. The color orange is warm and inviting. Paired with the Apple Green it creates a focal point and immediately tells the viewer what this is. Read full post
The day is steadily approaching when The Pantry will move to its new location. At the end of April, we signed the Purchase Agreement for a 22,300 square foot building located at 5308 S. Division Ave. The building has ‘great bones,’ as the kids these days say. Structurally the building is very sound and has a newer roof. A great deal of work is needed: heating and cooling systems need updated or replaced and a build out of offices and classrooms is also greatly needed, but it is all very doable. Read full post
Since 1985, The Pantry (formerly known as John Knox Food Pantry) has provided low-income residents of southeastern Kent County with a full menu of life-sustaining services: emergency food, holiday giving programs, social services referrals and more recently; community gardens, health and wellness education and fitness programs.
